Captain Marvel (2019)- a Movie Review

Going to watch this movie was a last minute decision of me and my friend's work day - and it turned out to be a really good choice to make. I had heard a lot about this movie, but was more excited about the upcoming Avengers: End Game movie (in April 2019) to really take much notice of this one coming out. I got really reviews from friends about it saying it wasn't that great, slow-paced etc. so I didn't go into it the movie theater with a bunch of expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised.

The story begins with the main heroine 'Vers' play-fighting Jude Law's character on a strange planet inhabited by the 'Kree' people and we quickly realize that she can throw flames with her punches and she has super powers, but she can't remember much of her past. Fast forward to a mission with the Kree people to save one of their own who was being held captive by another race called the 'Skrulls' and she somehow loses the fight, gets separated from the rest of her team and lands on Planet Earth set in the 1990's (this message gets across through a variety of ways: slow internet jokes, the people's fashion and style, captain Fury having both eyes, the cars in the film, etc.). She slowly discovers she had a life back there on Earth , went by the name of 'Carol Denvers' and what unfolds is discovering who she really was (and is) and what she is truly capable of now.

The most inspiring elements for me, to take away from the film were that through her personal identity crises; we get to see that though the human race (and more so the human female) is weak - it also has tremendous potential to keep on rising again, trying again and drawing strength from experience and failures. It doesn't have to give up and stay down.

It was great to watch this in the week of International Women's Day (March 08th 2019), when the film released with such a women - empowering message. Brie Larson does a fantastic job in bringing this character alive and I'm excited to catch her again with the whole cast and crew in Avengers: End Game coming out next month.

Did you catch this movie yet? What are your thoughts? If you're up for an inter-galactic space adventure that meets a humble girl turning into a super hero, this is a great movie to watch.

Have a great day!
